Karlan Judd
(b. 1968)
Ever since Karlan turned his heart from accounting (not his thing!) to music about 10 years ago, he has been writing, performing, conducting, producing and directing in pursuit of fantastic musical experience. He collaborated with LA-based writer Bill Crowe to write a hilarious southern comedy, The Case of the B-Team Cheerleader. This show played at the Stella Adler Theatre in Hollywood for six weeks in early 1998. In addition to great responses from audiences, the show received great reviews in local newspapers and trade magazines and was optioned for Broadway and London production. He ecstatically enjoys the collaborative process of working with singers, musicians, writers, directors, etc., and relentlessly pursues dynamic artistic relationships and endeavors. He has been commissioned to arrange/write songs for orchestras and choirs, recently being commissioned to write a choral song for the Rock Creek Singers in Washington D.C.. This song will receive its premiere in Christmas 2001. He worked with the drama department at the University of La Verne to add an original song to their production of Shakespeare's As You Like It. His songs have been performed by artists, bands, and choirs throughout the Los Angeles area.
In addition to his compositional pursuits, Karlan is also an accomplished performer. He has worked professionally in Los Angeles for the past 5 years. Most recently, he sang back up for Sara Brightman at her "La Luna" concert at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles. His roles in music theatre have included Lamar in Godspell, King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar, Thurio in the musical adaptation of Two Gentlemen of Verona, and Melvin P. Thorpe in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. He has worked in local churches, played in clubs with bands, and sung in professional caroling groups.
Karlan received a Master's degree in Choral Conducting at the University of California Los Angeles, and received his Bachelor's degree in Music, specializing in composition, also at UCLA. At UCLA, he received the Elaine Krowne Klein Fine Arts Award and the Moremen Choral Conducting Scholarship. He moved to Los Angeles from Phoenix, AZ, where he attended Glendale Community College . |
